Not many in India are aware that the rich and diverse scripts of Indian regional languages were not forcibly converted into the Roman script which happened in the case of other Far Eastern colonies of the British Raj and were allowed to survive and thrive because a pragmatic group of Indologists of the nineteenth century, Dr. Bühler being one of the most towering figures amongst them, stood vehemently against this destruction. It is therefore no wonder that his monumental work and repute as an epigrapher and palaeographer earned him a place among the first fifty individuals appointed to the ‘Order of the Indian Empire’ in 1878.

Dr. Bühler was in many ways a focal point for Indological scholarship in German Europe, opening doors for the expansion of active Indological studies in German universities.

Book on

Largely drawn from original and archival sources, this monograph stands out as a distinctive work on the biography of Philip Anderson: 1816 - 1857. The monograph sketches Anderson’s contribution in the field of literature. As Chaplain of the Afghan Church in Bombay, the monograph explores his ability to navigate between his religious duties and his historical investigation.

The author has critically evaluated his book, English in Western India, (1856), which encapsulates not just the political account of the Early English in India; but goes beyond, it reveals a living account of the challenges and tribulations and the manner of overcoming situations that confronted the early Englishmen in India; that bribery and corruption were as much a part of the politics of the time as today.

Interestingly, Anderson’s significant literary contribution as the editor of the Bombay Quarterly Review (1855- 1857) makes it a valuable source material, especially for research scholars and historians.
